Through the thorns

2017 Moscow state University named after Lomonosov open the Department of space studies. It is expected to become a leading center for the training of professionals who are actively involved in space expansion of mankind and, in particular, Russia. “the Tape.ru” talks about what can students learn in the walls of the faculty and what is needed.

Space research and solving problems for space exploration, scientists of the Moscow University are involved with the middle of the last century. Outstanding scientists who created the space glory of our country worked at Moscow University, among them — Mstislav Keldysh, Lev Pontryagin, Dmitry skobeltzyn, Dmitry okhotsimsky, gorimir Black. But the work was carried out also on a variety of devices, including satellite systems, solved the task of creation of simulators for training astronauts. So, in the 70-ies of the last century to the current rector of the University Viktor Sadovnichiy asked the staff cosmonaut training Center with a request to simulate the conditions of weightlessness on Earth. For this purpose a group of scientists, mechanics and mathematics faculty have developed a special simulator for training cosmonauts on the basis of TSF-18 centrifuge. For this project, the experts received the Lenin prize — the highest award, which is awarded for major achievements in science, technology, literature, art and architecture. But there were other projects handled, for example, at the Department of wave and gas dynamics.

In the 90-ies, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, there is an urgent and still have not completely solved the problem of “brain drain” that has led to a significant decrease in the number of interesting projects. However, the space has not been forgotten, and is still in the Arsenal of the Moscow state University there are good professionals who contribute to its development.

So, in addition to the mechanics and mathematics faculty of space is dealt with by State astronomical Institute at Sternberg. His staff not only conduct theoretical research, but also engage in applied issues, including the problem of increasing the accuracy of navigation devices up to several centimeters. The Institute of nuclear physics studying the effect of charged particles on radio equipment and living organisms. All machines are running MSU, including the “Universitetskiy” and heavy satellite “Lomonosov”, was made in the same place. In General, each faculty contributes to the exploration of space. Their projects have a physical, chemical, biological faculties, the faculty of fundamental medicine faculty of computational mathematics and Cybernetics.

At some point the idea appeared to unite disparate specialists and research teams and to transfer the accumulated knowledge to students. After all, Russia has a good engineering school, so she can create the space technology of any complexity, there are experts that can answer the question “how to fly?” But in the space industry clearly there is a lack of experts who can answer the question “why fly?” and then how to use the results. Therefore, the primary objective is to prepare such specialists.

Rector of Moscow University, academician Victor Sadovnichy has proposed the creation of faculty space research, which was supported by the academic Council of the University, and February 16, 2017 the Department was created. The main objective of the faculty is to train specialists in the field of fundamental and applied space research. Students receive training in mechanics, space physics, computer Sciences and classical astronomy. Now on its base to conduct research and is created of ballistic center, work on the preparation for the exploration of the moon, are preparing experiments to the ISS. The scientific work actively involve students, enabling them to apply their knowledge in practice.

the First year since the establishment of the faculty were challenged to determine the direction of his work. It was necessary to understand who exactly you need to prepare and where graduates will be in demand. For this it was necessary to determine which enterprises of the Russian space industry are hungry for specialists. Links were established with Roscosmos, RKK Energiya and Russian space systems.

“the First master’s program, which we created, was the “Intellectual technology of mixed reality for aerospace systems”, it is managed by our rector Viktor Sadovnichy,” says Vasily Sazonov, acting Dean of the faculty. The goal of this program is to prepare specialists in the field of effects on the human body overloads and weightlessness. Students learn to use the technology of virtual and mixed reality to simulate the conditions faced by an astronaut in outer space. They also get acquainted with the anatomy of the vestibular apparatus and methods of counteracting negative effects in the orbit.

Another program is called “Methods and technologies of remote sensing of the Earth.” Its meaning is that in recent years the growing number of satellites and communication channels, increasing the amount of information. Daily satellites receive up to 100 terabytes of data, and over time these amounts will only grow. So much information to process manually is impossible, so it is necessary to develop new approaches based on the science of big data. Only in this case will create an advanced remote sensing system that performs most of the work without human intervention.

the Third program — “public Administration in the space industry” — aimed at preparing those who understand the specifics of the industry, its problems and difficulties and be able to cope with the administrative tasks.

Finally, “Space biomedical research” is designed for those who have completed a bachelor degree in biology. The goal of the program is to prepare researchers who will study the physiology of humans and other living organisms in a space flight environment. These professionals needed to develop systems on Board a ship or manned space station, which take into account anatomical and physiological characteristics of a person. At the same time, you need to consider that the astronauts must meet strict requirements, as people must perform operations that can’t be left to automation, but at the same time exposed to radiation, microgravity, stress, and need trouble-free life-support systems.

the Past year has shown that those who are employed in the departments, different levels of training. As a result, the alignment of the level of knowledge is lost for some time. However, this year, it will open the specialist program, where students will be able to pass a six-year training program “Space research and space exploration.” Although their specialty would be a fundamental mathematics and mechanics, they will get a good basic training in physics and computer science, will have an idea about machine learning, parallel programming, and the device of the spacecraft.

it is Expected that graduates will be able to work with big data to develop algorithms for processing satellite data and to write programs for remote control of robots. This means that they also have a good understanding of computer vision, solid state physics, in coding and pattern recognition. However, this does not mean that at the end of the program you need to become an expert in everything. From graduates primarily required to become a “connecting link” between different fields of scientific knowledge, to be able to set goals and to find their solution.

In the future, the program may include additional activities, such as microelectronics.the faculty also will be retraining of specialists of rocket and space industry to solve actual problems such as the reliability of space equipment.

Students who graduate from the faculty, will find themselves not only in the space industry. Good preparation in mathematics, physics and computer science will give them good prospects in the labour market, including abroad.br />
